THE presence of females in Student Union Government (SUG) roles should be noteworthy on campus. For some reasons that are best known to the female leaders, the position of Vice-President 1 always appears to suit them.
Looking at the last four executive boards, from the 34th to the 37th, we see a remarkable shift in female representation. Among the seventeen members of these executives, the number of females has varied: the 34th and the 35th had five each, the 36th had six, and the current 37th executive boasts seven females—the highest representation of women in the history of the OOU Student Union.
Despite this progress, it is important to note that no female has yet been elected as SUG president. The only woman to have held the presidency is Taiwo Seyefunmi, who assumed office during the 2003/2004 session following the impeachment of Femi Nuberu. Seyefunmi previously served as Vice President under Nuberu's administration, marking her as a two-time Vice President 1 during both the Olumide Onafeso and Nuberu tenures.
This evolving landscape highlights the strides made by women in student leadership.
The Presidency remains the main challenge to achieve for females, as it is the highest position within the SUG.
