The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Champions Football League (CFL), Mr Nifesimi Orunesajo, has hinted fans about the exhilarating events to occur in the 24/25 season of the competition, scheduled to start on Monday, November 4, 2024.
Nifesimi in an interview with Campus Mirror on Thursday, made it known that a new match format has been initiated and will take effect in the 24/25 season, stating that it is one of the ways to entertain the fans, and also revealed the inclusion of four new teams, Golden Stallions FC, Lightening FC, Elite Eagle FC and Cybernauts FC.
“We have four new teams so the excitement levels are through the roof. For the first time, we're having the home and away format so rivalries made would be rekindled during the season. Drama and twists should be expected, both on and off the pitch,” he said.
Meanwhile, he also reiterated the goal of the competition, which he described as an avenue for players with no solid stage to showcase and prune their talents and also partner with student brands to push their business.
“Champions Football League is an avenue for players who wouldn't normally get a consistent stage to showcase their talent and improve, thrive on that in CFL
“We give a platform for high intensity, high level of competitive football and we also partner with student brands to give visibility and credibility to their businesses,” he added.
It could be recalled that, the CFL league competition gives room for a transfer market where different clubs can trade players, which according to the founder, Nifesimi, was in line with his inspiration to have created the league, where students from different departments and faculties can play together.
In his words; “The idea of not being restricted by faculties and departments in building a team of players I feel would create balance in a team, inspired the creation of the league. That was also in line with a transfer market where the clubs can make deals by signing and transferring players between themselves," he said.
The winner of the league competition will be entitled to a sum of one twenty thousand naira, while the first runner-up will receive the sum of fifty thousand naira. Prizes for player of match week and also individual awards at end of season would be available.
