By Odunayo Babalola

The Mental Health Society Initiative, Olabisi Onabanjo University (MHSI-OOU), the Students' Union Government (SUG) in collaboration with Ali on Paper Africa, has launched a groundbreaking mental health initiative, “Avant-garde with Ali,” themed “Crusading Mental Well-being for Gen Z, Alpha, and so on,” on Thursday, November 28, in OOU, Ago-Iwoye.

The event which aimed to address the pressing need for mental health awareness among young people, also underscored the growing need for mental health awareness among young people in today’s fast-paced world. Through initiatives, Ali on Paper Africa fosters meaningful conversations around mental well-being and breaking stigmas to create a supportive community for future generations.

Lanky, the co-convener of the event,  n  during an interview with Campus Mirror, emphasized the importance of acknowledging mental struggles; he said: "Our mental struggles are real and we can always overcome them as long as we speak up. If you don't know what you're going through, you'll never find a solution to it. This is why we've brought Avant-garde with Ali." His remarks highlight the initiative's goal of encouraging open conversations about mental health.

Meanwhile, Mr Ali Powell, the convener of the event and a renowned writer, during an interview with Campus Mirror, has shared his inspiration for the initiative.

"The inspiration is the brand trying to connect with young Africans. We've attempted many ways to connect with young Africans and now we've brought this to meet physically with the target. Mental wellness hasn't been a topic that we have a conversation around in our society for a long time," he added.

The event featured an award presentation, cash prizes for winners and also had in attendance some notable figures, including; Solanke Joshua (BabyAli), Dr. Tamuno Opubo, founder of OOU’s MHSI, Mr. Rotimi Ashley Dejo, chairman of LAC Trucks and Spares, Ali, on paper, The SUG President, among others.
