BETRAYAL, LIES, AND REVENGE: THE TWISTED JUSTICE IN PENANCE

By Odunayo Babalola

From a psychological perspective, revenge can serve as a coping mechanism for individuals dealing with anger, hurt, and powerlessness. By seeking revenge, a person may feel a sense of control and empowerment. But what truly pushes someone to take justice into their own hands? And at what cost?

The movie Penance, directed by Awal Abdulfatai, is a gripping story filled with twists, betrayal, and retribution. It follows Alice, a young NYSC member posted to a law firm owned by a man she once admired, named Majek. But beneath her admiration lies deep-seated resentment. She devises a plan to implicate him, ultimately leading to his downfall.

Alice accuses Majek of rape, visibly shaken as she confides in her sister, who takes her to the police. Detective Festus, a man with a personal vendetta against rapists due to his sister’s experience, takes on the case with fierce determination.

As the investigation unfolds, shocking details emerge. Alice had intentionally deflowered herself to frame Majek. While Majek initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming Alice had always liked him, Detective Festus was unconvinced. With every new piece of evidence, including past allegations from female employees, Majek’s case worsened.

Under pressure, Majek changed his story. He admitted to an encounter with Alice but insisted it was consensual. Detective Festus remained relentless, determined to see justice served.

In a dramatic twist, Alice finally reveals her true motive, which is 'revenge'. She had been close friends with a woman Majek had impregnated and later publicly denied, a betrayal that led to the woman’s tragic death. Fueled by grief and anger, Alice orchestrated her form of justice, ensuring Majek faced the consequences of his actions.

While Penance delivers a powerful message, its ending leaves much to be desired. The sudden firing of the lawyer and Alice’s sister’s inaction regarding crucial information left several questions unanswered. Was Alice justified in her actions, or should she have faced repercussions herself? The movie forces us to confront a difficult question: When does justice cross the line in to vengeance?
