The Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), has hosted its first-ever Academic Symposium and Departmental Debate on Monday, April 28, 2025.
The event, themed "Empowering Gen Z through knowledge: Libraries as Catalysts for Change," featured discussions from students and lecturers, focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation on the future of libraries and information management.
Participants explored the evolving relevance of libraries while emphasizing the critical role of information scientists in a changing world.
The highlight of the event was the Inter-Level debate between 100-level and 200-level students on the topic, "In the Age of AI and Digital Media, Are Libraries Still Relevant to the Future of Education?" After a fiery exchange of brilliant arguments and counterpoints, the 200-level team emerged victorious, demonstrating exceptional intellect and confidence.
Adding prestige to the event, the University Librarian of Olabisi Onabanjo University honored the department with her presence. She commended LISSA for championing academic excellence and encouraged students to remain steadfast in embracing innovation while upholding the traditional values of the library profession.
This historic event has set a new standard of achievement within the department, inspiring a renewed spirit of scholarship and unity among Library and Information Science students at OOU. LISSA Week ’25 has undoubtedly kicked off on a high note, promising even greater engagements in the days ahead.
